Frequently Asked Questions on UPSC Syllabus 2027

Has the UPSC CSE syllabus changed for 2027?

No structural changes have been made to the core 3-stage examination scheme for 2027. The examination retains its structure: Preliminary Examination (GS 1 and CSAT), Main Examination (9 descriptive papers totaling 1,750 merit marks), and Personality Test (275 marks). However, the analytical depth in dynamic current affairs, technology indigenization, environment, and applied ethics case studies has significantly increased.

Are CSAT marks counted for the UPSC Prelims merit list?

No. General Studies Paper II (CSAT) is strictly qualifying in nature. Candidates must score a minimum of 33% (66 marks out of 200). Your Prelims rank and qualification for Mains depend solely on your net score in General Studies Paper I.

What is the total marks of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2027?

The final merit list is calculated out of 2,025 marks. This comprises 1,750 marks from the 7 Main Examination merit papers (Essay, GS 1, GS 2, GS 3, GS 4, Optional Paper I & II) plus 275 marks from the Personality Test (Interview). The two qualifying language papers (300 marks each) and Prelims marks are not added to the final total.

How many optional subjects are there in UPSC Mains 2027?

Candidates must select one optional subject from the list of 26 core subjects (such as PSIR, Geography, Sociology, History, Anthropology, Public Administration) or from literature of 23 recognized languages. The selected optional has 2 papers of 250 marks each (Total: 500 marks).

Is there negative marking in UPSC Prelims and Mains?

In the Preliminary Examination, there is a penalty of 1/3rd of the marks assigned to that question for every incorrect answer (0.66 marks deducted in GS 1 and 0.83 marks in CSAT). In the Main Examination (descriptive papers), there is no objective negative marking, but penalties may be imposed by examiners for illegible handwriting, exceeding word limits, or violating question paper instructions.
